Passenger rail lines across the region, with proposals to expand or introduce new commuter rail service highlighted. Note that a number of changes have taken place since this map was created in 2005: SMART has been rejected by voters (although it will likely be voted on again); the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE), would-be operator of the Central Valley Express, has studied several additional routes; yet more routes have been proposed as part of the Regional Rail Plan; and some previous proposals now appear to be more or less inactive, and may never be built. Nonetheless, the map serves as a guide to what an eventual regional system might look like.
