Alternative alignments for the
California High-Speed Rail project. Public vote on funding for the initial segment, between the Bay Area and Los Angeles (possibly Anaheim), has been repeatedly delayed. Selection of a Central Valley-Bay Area alignment was also delayed: The High-Speed Rail Authority had chosen a southern route, through San Jose (the Pacheco option shown here is the most likely alignment within that corridor), but late in the process it reconsidered an alternative favored by transit activists and environmentalists. That alternative, the Altamont corridor, was more developed and would've better connected the Bay Area and northern Valley. In the end, CHSRA chose the southern alignment for long-distance service, but pledged to support high-speed regional rail on the Altamont alignment. Note that station locations have not been finalized.
